Nail biting, online shopping, social media refreshing, singing along to any and every Taylor Swift song at my lungs’ full capacity. We all have bad habits that we’re working on. Some bad habits are more annoying to our partners than others. My Taylor Swift volume problem might fall into that category. One thing that really gets under my skin is procrastination. I’m such a get-er-done person that procrastination makes no sense to me. Read more
My personal rule for myself when I’m single is to always say yes to a first date. Always, always, always. I say yes even when I “know” a first date isn’t going to be a love connection. I’m no psychic and I’ve been wrong about who I’ve had chemistry with in the past. I tell my clients to be open minded and I remind myself to do the same thing all the time. That being said, there are times when you have a first date coming up and you get the urge to cancel it. Read more
I have one girlfriend whom we call Goldilocks because she’s so picky with relationships. Everyone she dates is too something. Recently, she’s been complaining about guys being too distant and then she started dating a guy and quickly ended it with him because he was too clingy. All of my friends laughed at that. One of my single girlfriends recently said something like, “Well, there goes 2016. I’m single until spring 2017!” I was so shocked. She’d completely given up on finding love for the next six months because she thinks that if you’re not with someone by the end of fall, you’re basically done for. She’s never met anyone during the wintertime. This woman is fantastic and smart and sexy and such a catch. I was shocked that she’d ever have a hard time meeting someone, so I had to dig a little deeper. And once I did, I realized what was going on. My friend wasn’t meeting anyone during the winter because she wasn’t putting herself out there during the winter. Read more
Hi Emily,
I learn so much from your podcasts! I am 36 and recently separated from a 16-year relationship. After waiting eight months, I decided I was ready to start dating again. A few colleagues of mine recommended some dating apps, so I checked them out. I went on two OKCupid dates and they went horribly. Then I gave it one last shot and started talking to a guy six years older than me. We have been talking for two weeks but haven't met in person yet. So far, our connection has been great!
So here’s my question for you: is there a certain timeline to meet this guy and move forward from there? What do you suggest when it comes to going from cyber- and phone-chatting to meeting IRL? Read more
Summer, summer, summertime! It’s summer! WHO-HOO! Even for a California girl like me, summer is a fun season. It’s not just about great weather, which I get all the time here in Los Angeles. Maybe it’s leftover from school break, but summer feels a bit more free than other times of the year. Summer’s about prioritizing fun, making the most of your weekends and travel. And summer travel often means family visits because it’s the season of Father’s Day, lots of weddings and family reunions. So, summer could also mean the first time your boo comes home with you. Here are some tips to make it fantastic. Read more
