Dating can get a little boring. We go to the same people for the same advice. We watch the same relationships over and over again, especially now that Friends is on Netflix. (Seriously, though, Ross and Rachel… I’ll never not ship them.) You probably even hang out with the same couples night after night and week after week. It can feel like nothing is really inspiring you in the realm of dating. So, I’ve decided to find three very unlikely places you can get dating inspiration from that will hopefully break up some of the boredom.
Taylor Swift
I know that Taylor Swift has become a relationship punchline, but I really don’t understand why. Yeah, she writes about relationships in her music, but so does everyone. Every writer, songwriter or otherwise, will incorporate their personal experiences into their work. Not sure why she gets skewered for it when she really never speaks about specifics. Anyway, have you ever really listened to Taylor’s lyrics? She has a very heady and intellectual point of view on love, lust and relationships. It’s worth Googling some of her lyrics and really giving some hard thought to how you think about love and relationships. Can you get on Taylor’s level of gut reactions mixed with serious almost academic study of love? It’s the perfect balance!
Your grandpa
Alright, I don’t know your grandpa personally, but I’m going to guess… you have absolutely no idea what his sex life is like, right? Well, I think that’s a good thing. (No disrespect to your grandfather, of course!) He knows his boundaries and he never crosses them. In today’s world of over sharing, everyone seems to be telling everybody about everything. But, the truth is that next to no one deserves to know anything about your private life. So, remember, keep it classy like your gramps the next time you’re tempted to tweet about your dating life.
Babies
Have you been around a baby recently? They’re so warm and loving and just assume that you’re there to love them and pay attention to them. I love that expectation of emotional generosity from everyone. If you’re single, you should have this attitude for every single one of your first dates. Expect the best out of the person you’re meeting and keep your expectations high. That positive energy will be rewarded big time. And conversely, if you go in being defensive, that negativity is going to bite you in the butt big time. So, get into that baby headspace before your next date.
Hope that was inspiring to you all! Writing it certainly made me think of relationships in a fresher way. Hey, I’m human. Even I get uninspired by love every now and then!
